More and more of our customers are asking the same question: "Is there something a bit more sustainable that still wears well?" The good news is that you no longer have to choose between a fabric that's kinder to the planet and one that stands up to everyday life.
Zepel Fabrics has been leading the way here, so here's what their recycled range is and what the labels actually mean.
What is a recycled fabric?
A recycled fabric is woven with yarns made, at least in part, from recycled material, most commonly recycled polyester. Instead of making new polyester from scratch, existing material is reprocessed into fresh yarn, then woven into upholstery and curtain fabric.
The finished fabric looks and feels like any other quality textile. Most people would never guess.
Zepel's Eco label
Zepel uses an Eco label for fabrics woven with recycled and organic yarns. According to Zepel, a design needs at least 50% recycled or organic content to earn the Eco name.
Some fabrics in the range also carry FibreGuard stain resistance, so you get a more sustainable fabric that's also easy to clean.
What is the Global Recycled Standard (GRS)?
Zepel Fabrics is certified to the Global Recycled Standard. In Zepel's words, GRS "verifies at least 50% recycled polyester and tracks it from the source/recycler to the final product."
GRS isn't just a label on the end product. The recycled content is independently verified at each stage of the supply chain, and certified organisations also have to meet social, environmental and chemical requirements along the way.
Many Zepel fabrics also carry Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which tests for harmful substances, and ISO 14001, an environmental management standard. Check each product's details for its certifications.
Beyond the fabric
Zepel says its sustainability work goes beyond textiles. It includes reducing paper waste and plastic, using solar energy, and moving more of its services online.

The most sustainable sofa is the one you already own
As upholsterers, we'll say it: one of the most sustainable things you can do is reupholster instead of replace. A well-built frame can last generations. New fabric, and new foam if needed, gives it a second life and keeps a whole piece of furniture out of landfill.
Pair that with a recycled, hard-wearing fabric and you've made a genuinely greener choice that still looks fantastic.
