Persian Pomegranate By GP & J Baker
It was hand drawn by the Haward Studio under the direction of Sidney Haward, a prominent designer who trained at the famous Silver Studio before setting up his own Kensington practice.
Haward Studio was highly regarded in London, supplying top-tier furnishing emporiums. The design document was acquired by GP & J Baker for 24 guineas in March 1931.
Cultural Fusion & Motifs
The pattern is a deliberate blend of East Asian and Middle Eastern design traditions:
The Chinese Influence: The primary structure uses a winding flowering branch, butterflies, and small perched birds characteristic of late 18th-century hand-painted Chinese wallpaper.
The Persian Elements: Haward Studio embellished the Chinoiserie foundation by adding traditional Persian textile motifs, specifically banded tree stems, nightingales, and ornate pomegranates.
